Meet Josh Cooperman, Host of our Pod Series, Convo by Design

This week we’re celebrating the 100th podcast of Convo by Design (CXD). As proud sponsors of the show, we thought it would be fun to turn the tables and interview our terrific host, Josh Cooperman. Read on to learn more about Josh and how the show came to be, then listen to the 100th episode, which includes our own Russ Diamond, architect Takashi Yanai, and Interiors editor-in-chief, Erika Heet, plus many more.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you began CXD. I’ve spent the vast majority of my career in broadcasting and I have always had a passion for interior design and architecture. I was consulting for California Home + Design magazine in 2012 and produced my first design house project, the Small Space, Big Style project. It was amazing—such remarkable partners and amazing designers. I involved the team at Snyder Diamond, who helped designers Azadeh Shladovsky Christian May, Erinn Valencich and Brian Patrick Flynn create stunning installations. I wanted to create a source that captured the essence, detail and process of these kinds of projects. That’s where Convo By Design came from. [You can check out Josh's video, here.]

How do you identify people and projects to feature on the show? I look for designers, architects, artists, product manufacturers and influencers with a unique style, perspective and voice. The range of guests has been vast but it’s always about the work, the design and the promotion of new ideas. I produce only one episode per week, so I have to be selective!

What have been some of your personal highlights of these 100 episodes? In the 100th episode, I included some of the guests that I felt really expressed the direction I’d like the show to go. Our stage at WestEdge was simply amazing. The Ryan White-designed space, partners like Snyder Diamond and Warner Bros., the interviews... the whole thing was incredibly challenging and wonderful! I’ve also really enjoyed the partnerships with the Pacific Design Center and the West Hollywood Design District. It's been amazing so far.

What's ahead for 2017? We started a YouTube channel in 2016 and this year I want to build on that and provide more on-site content in both audio and video. I plan on following designers and architects through projects to show the development of projects in real time; I want to show the process and planning that goes into the work. We’ll be more involved than ever with the design community and there are some additional exciting elements to our editorial calendar that I think will turn a few heads!

You can follow CXD on services like iTunes or by following along via our blog, Design on Tap, where we post all of the podcasts and videos.
