Oy vey, what would Los Angeles be without its vibrant Jewish community? Second only to New York City in size, our Jewish residents add a whole lotta latkes to the amazing melting pot that gives L.A. its incredible flavor. Los Angeles' Jewish community is a beautiful blend of cultures, shaped by immigrants from Eastern Europe, Iran, Israel, Mexico, Argentina, Ethiopia, and beyond. With such a rich and diverse heritage, it's no surprise that there's a growing need for interior designers who can create kosher kitchens that are both stylish and functional, reflecting the unique traditions and modern lifestyles of the families who use them. But what does that entail, knowing that kosher kitchens have specific and unique requirements? Well—we’re here to tell you.

If you’re unfamiliar, a kosher kitchen is a haven for observant Jews, and like any other interior design project, presents its own unique set of challenges and considerations that extend beyond aesthetics—a kosher kitchen design requires a meticulous orchestration of function, ritual, and culinary creativity. So, if you’ve ever wanted to design a kosher kitchen that’s both beautiful and brimming with functionality, this Snyder Diamond blog article covers most of the key considerations.

The Foundation: Understanding Kosher Principles

Before even sketching a floor plan, a deep understanding of Jewish dietary laws (kashrut) is critical. “A few years ago I designed a very large kosher kitchen in Beverlywood and it was indeed a learning process.” explains Jacqueline Steinberg ASID of Eve Mode Design. “My biggest surprise was that the interpretations of kosher laws and principles can vary according to different rabbis and Jewish communities”

The key Jewish dietary principles include:

  • Meat and Dairy Separation: Keeping meat and dairy separate is essential in a kosher kitchen. This means having different sets of dishes, utensils, and cooking surfaces for each. To accommodate this, kitchens typically need two clearly defined cooking zones.
  • Treif (Non-Kosher) Foods: Prohibited foods include pork, shellfish, and certain types of meat.
  • Kashering: The process of preparing utensils and surfaces for kosher use after contact with non-kosher foods. This may involve rigorous cleaning, immersion in boiling water, or other methods.
  • Supervision (if applicable): Some observant Jews may require rabbinical supervision for certain aspects of their kitchen. “As we proceeded with our design,” Jacqueline continues “the client had to confer with her rabbi frequently to obtain his specific interpretations, which in this case, were very strict."

Layout and Zoning: Creating Distinct Cooking Zones

When designing a kosher kitchen designers manage two types of zoning: that from building codes and from the kosher tradition. Though strict with regard to the core principles, there’s more freedom than many designers assume. Laurie Haefele from Haefele Design explains: “Some of the common mistakes people make when designing a kosher kitchen is that kosher and non kosher sinks and appliances need to be located across the room from one another. It’s ok for them to be adjacent as long as there is no cross contamination.”

Here's a common kosher layout and zoning approach:

Meat Section:

  • Designated sink for meat preparation and cleanup

  • Dedicated cooktop and oven for meat cooking

  • Separate storage for meat utensils and dishes

Dairy Section:

  • Dedicated sink for dairy preparation and cleanup

  • Dedicated cooktop and oven for dairy cooking

  • Separate storage for dairy utensils and dishes

Neutral Section:

  • Designated for food items that are neither meat nor dairy, such as vegetables, grains, and fruits

  • Separate sink specifically for preparing these neutral foods is a good idea

Appliance Selection: Choosing the Right Tools

Appliance selection is critical, as Jacqueline explains “A kosher kitchen can be just as stylish, functional and luxurious as any other high-end kitchen and, Wolf, Subzero and other top appliance manufacturers now offer convenient innovations like Sabbath settings—which means a kosher kitchen doesn't need to sacrifice aesthetics for function anymore.”

Look for models with:

  • Dual Fuel Ranges: Offering gas burners for precise searing and electric ovens for even heating, dual-fuel ranges are perfect for preparing both meat and dairy dishes. Wolf,  Miele, and Monogram are among many top dual fuel range options to consider for your kosher kitchen.

  • Double Ovens: A must-have for kosher kitchens, double ovens from Viking, Gaggenau, and other luxury appliance brands let you cook meat and dairy dishes at the same time without any risk of overlap, saving time and effort.

  • Induction Cooktops: Responsive and energy-efficient, induction cooktops offer precise temperature control for delicate dairy dishes. Thermador, Jennair, Gaggenau, Miele, and many other brands offer high-quality induction ranges and cooktops that are worth discovering.

  • Separate Microwaves: One for meat and one for dairy.

  • Dishwashers with Separate Cycles: Some brands like Cove, Dacor, and Fisher & Paykel offer separate cycles for meat and dairy dishes, minimizing the risk of cross-contamination.

Storage Solutions: Keeping it Organized

  • Separate Cabinets: Separate cabinets should be used for meat, dairy dishes, and utensils. Consider using pull-out shelves to provide easy access.

  • Double Drawers: Maximize space using double drawers will allow for separation of utensils.

  • Labeled Containers: Clearly label all containers to prevent accidental mixing of meat and dairy items.

Countertops: Durable and Easy to Clean

Like the old adage about “measure twice, cut once” it’s always best to consult the experts before choosing materials.  “The first time I designed a kosher kitchen I didn’t realize some countertops were kosher approved and some not kosher.” recalls  Laurie Haefele. “The client's rabbi can tell you.”

  • Quartz: Comprised of crushed quartz, resins, polymers, pigments, and sometimes glass or metallic flecks, quartz countertops are an excellent choice for kosher kitchens—they’re durable, stain-resistant, and heat-resistant.

  • Granite: Made up of mostly quartz and feldspar, granite countertops are highly resistant to heat and stains while providing a natural and elegant look.

  • Stainless Steel: Easy to clean and sanitize, stainless steel countertops are ideal for high-traffic areas.

Flooring: Practical and Stylish

  • Tile: Available in a wide range of colors and styles, tile flooring can be very attractive, but of equal importance, durable and easy to clean.

  • Natural Stone: Known for creating an elegant look, natural stone flooring is durable and easy to maintain.

  • Vinyl: Offers a waterproof and slip-resistant surface, vinyl flooring is a practical option for kitchen floors.

Lighting: Enhancing the Culinary Experience

  • Under-cabinet Lighting: Provides ample task lighting for food preparation and cleanup.

  • Pendant Lights: Add a touch of style and provide focused illumination over specific work areas.

  • Natural Light: Incorporate large windows or skylights to take advantage of natural light.

Design Considerations for Small Spaces

  • Multi-Functional Appliances: Consider appliances with multiple functions, such as a microwave that can also be used as a convection oven.

  • Space-Saving Storage Solutions: Tall cabinets, pull-out shelves, and corner organizers are great ways to utilize vertical space.

  • Fold-Down Tables: Fold-down tables that can be tucked away when not in use are creative ways to create extra workspace.

Embracing Personal Style

Make your kitchen your own by including in your favorite colors, textures, and finishes in order to create a space that’s practical and a reflection of your personality.

The Importance of a Qualified Designer

Working with a kitchen designer experienced in kosher design is highly recommended. They can help you:

  • Optimize Space: Create a layout that maximizes efficiency and minimizes the risk of cross-contamination.

  • Select Appropriate Materials: Choose materials that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

  • Guide Appliance Selection: An expert will help you determine the right appliances for your specific needs and budget.

  • Ensure Code Compliance: A qualified designer will ensure your kitchen design meets all relevant building codes and regulations.

Conclusion

Designing a kosher kitchen is a rewarding endeavor. By carefully considering the principles of kashrut and incorporating thoughtful design elements, you can create a space that is both functional, beautiful, and a true reflection of your culinary and spiritual values.
